How to search the web.

How do you search for local services?
Sounds like a simple question but it has a complicated answer.

Most of us are now using the internet to do all of our searching for information and services.  The phone books now make good door stops or paper weights.

I think that for me the switch came as my eye sight began to deteriorate.  I just could not see the little print in the phone books and looking for an ad in the news paper gave me a headache.  Plus, it is a lot more fun to sit with you laptop and browse.

However, it is always good to think about our search habits on the web.  I bring this up because I find that my own habits are not getting me the results I want.  I have a habit of looking up my own service each day.  I type in key words like “ Paint, Painting, Painter, Painters with an added description of Fayetteville Arkansas or Northwest Arkansas”.  This keeps it local and lets me see who is popping up.

Well for a whole year this worked great!  Then the biggest search engine, “ you know who it is” started playing around with algorithms and changed a lot of the results.  For instance, if your name contains any of those wonderful key words that I mentioned then you got onto the front page.  If your name did not contain any of those words, well, sorry.  I found this most disheartening so I started blogging like a mad man and guess what.  All of my blogs started showing up, but still no web site.

I worried each day about what to do?  So I started to think, “ What if I needed more than a painting service”.  I then realized that most people will need more than just a painter.  They will need someone to remove wallpaper or paint over a special surface like paneling or the walls need to be repaired and textured.  The list grew bigger and bigger in my mind.  So I started searching for a more detailed service like “ Painters and wall repairs, painting over paneling, painting and texturing, painting and wallpaper removal”  all with the local location Fayetteville Arkansas or Northwest Arkansas.  AND GUESS WHAT?  I showed up front page with my web site and all of my blogs.  In some searches I had every listing on the first 5 pages.

I also found this type of more detailed and specific searching to get me the results I wanted for other services. I went search crazy, I would search for Mexican Restaurants, where to get my oil changed, who had the best prices on yogurt and the most important, where is the cheapest gas in town.  I was instantly hooked!

Well things are better in my little world of searching the internet.  You might want to give some thought about how you search.  I know, we live in a very busy world and it is so easy to type in just one word.  But the results will usually not be what you are really looking for and you have to keep typing in different one word searches hoping for the result that you want.  So, “change it up” and have some fun.  You will be surprised.

I know that this blog is off subject from my usual articles but I just had to share what I found out.  Give it some thought, be a rebel, don’t follow the crowd, start a new movement “MORE DETAILED SEARCHES!”
