Why so many coats

Hello DYI's.  So you are trying to paint a room in your house and it seems to take so many coats.  Vibrant colors are the hardest to cover with such as reds, greens and blues.  So what to do.  First, buy a premium paint.  I know it is tempting to buy the cheap stuff but you will have to use more and you will spend a lot more time since you will have to do multiple coats.  Also, cheaper paints are never a match for the colors offered by premium paints.  The secret is what is in the can.  Better paints have better ingredients. Premium paints also offer low VOC's.  We will talk about that in a later blog.  Anyway to continue on.  Another useful item is a dark gray primer.  Several companies offer this.  Get Latex-acrylic gray primer/sealer.  Put this on the wall first.  It provides an optical illusion.  You will then be able to paint the walls in 2 coats.  One heavy first coat and the second will be a light coat.  The reason for this is not the paint but the painter.  When we paint it is usually not uniform or all the same thickness.  Most of the primers that you can choose from dry to be painted in one hour.  Of course quality rollers and brushes are a must. They are so much easier to work with.  A good 2 1/2" nylon/poly brush is the best for cut in.  A good 1/2" or 3/4" roller cover is also the best.  When I say good ones I mean you will have to buy them separate from a paint tray/roller/brush combo.  Expect to pay around $9.00 for a brush and around $6.00 for the roller cover.  They do clean up very well and can be used for many painting projects in the future.  It is money well spent.  Premium paint, quality brushes and rollers and quality gray primer are the tools you will need to paint those vibrant colors in a fraction of the time it will take others to do.  Of course Ken Rader Interiors can do the work for you and you don't have to buy the stuff or spend you time.  Give us a try.
