HAPPY PAINTING AND DECORATING!
The consumer, that is we the peep's, continue to drift between the real and unreal – their fantasies and reality. In terms of color, for the spring/summer 2013 season we are focusing on the continual interest in all things past but offered in a new, contemporary way. The 90s washed-out brights, the web with its unexpected and unconventional colors and textures, nature and all it has to offer and our perception, always changing and morphing, are all the major drivers of color change for the upcoming spring/summer 2013 season.
The color pink is back in all channels and inspires new aesthetics in the high end fashion product creation. In the past few seasons, we have seen pink slowly creep back into designers’ collections and make a statement. The controversial color went out of style as the shade easily labeled as too cute, young and unintelligent. It is now back and women’s wear designers are now claiming back and offering it in an array of colors. For the spring/summer 2013 season we are finding that several are forecasting both, bright and young shades alongside dustier, more subdued colors. The consumer craves youth and all it has to offer and is striving to retain a piece of their and others’ young days by gravitating towards colors such as pink.

GREEN is another color that has been falling in and out of the consumer’s favor. The forest shades have long been associated with nature and the consumer’s need to reconnect to all things natural and real. However, in the couple season preceding spring/summer 2013 we saw signs of decline in consumer’s interest in green. For the upcoming spring season we are once again gravitating towards green but this time, in more fun youthful shades or duller, barely-there dusty colors. Yellow continues to bring a sense of excitement and playfulness, this time the attention is on cooler and brighter shades.

Sulfur yellow is a must-have shade for the spring/summer season. The acid-inspired yellows of past seasons are transforming into cooler, more out-of-this-world hues that feel superficial and abstract. The mustard shades, as seen during the past summer forecast, are now taking on a brighter, less vintage-inspired cast.

The tropics continue to inspire strong shades of orange, pink and red. For the summer 2013 season, the focus is on rich tomato-inspired reds and deep Crimson pinks. Orange is still important but we are more interested in less-athletic and more sophisticated orange shades.

The neutral shades of summer are proving to be as important as the loud and vibrant brights. These new neutral shades continue to take on pink, green, yellow and blue overtone and are offered in an array of cool and warm shades. Natural colorants have a strong influence in the resulting terracotta and eggshell-inspired colors.

Bleached brights are the focus of the spring/summer 2013 seasonal color palette. We are deeply inspired by the easy, familiarity and opportunity for experimentation that these colors offer. Washed-out pinks and purples are mixed with stronger shades of teal and neutral greys to create a fresh, sophisticated summer story.

The shades of mint and teal seen in the past few seasons are all softening and getting lighter for the spring/summer 2013 season. Seafoam is currently proving to be a commercially profitable color for the spring 2012 season and we are seeing it evolve into a lighter, more washed-out color as it reaches the 2013 summer season. Salmon and peach shades are also going to take on a new bleached look.

Deep, rich and sensual shades of blue will continue to inspire the consumer and will resonate with the ever-growing need to reconnect to nature and their spirituality. Bright ultramarine shades are key for the spring/summer 2013 season as well as pure Klein hues and more unconventional hybrid of purple and blue. Highly dramatic photography inspires new ways to look at and think go blue and the possibilities it offers.

The color of wood and all things natural – brown, is as important as ever. As the consumer demands more quality-driven product these true, natural shades are more important than ever. For the 2013 summer season we are forecasting a more subdued and not-in-your-face brown shades. Brown resonates with the consumer’s need to feel closer to nature and to feel part of it.

What I see in these colors is the desire to stay with what we are comfortable with.  These colors are still being influenced by the colors that we started using in 2011 and 2012.  The hues and the shades are a little different and evidently different enough to make us feel and think that they are new.
Of course as the year starts and progresses we will see changes in our likes and dis-likes.  Our choices in what we want to be surrounded with will be influenced by what happens in the world and to our families or personally. Color is the spice of life and we will continue to add more spice in our quest to enjoy life as much as we can.  It will be exciting and fun to see what the future holds in store for us.  So, What Color will be your new favorite for 2013?

HAPPY PAINTING AND DECORATING!

As the new year approaches, people are looking for a way to update the home. Every year brings new ideas and trendy colors. Here are some great ways to stay on top of design and transform the house for 2013.

Gray is my new must-have, grounded neutral—forget black," says New York designer Eric Cohler. "Almost any shade of gray will transcend the traditional, adding freshness. It’s the perfect masculine-feminine combination color to use in a room. Think yin and yang."
Color Trend: Shades of Gray

Color Palette

The first part of decorating is choosing the right color. Recent seasons have included bright colors as a major trend. 2013 is seeing a departure from bright colors of the past, with the addition of a more sophisticated backdrop of neutral colors. This does not mean that the room must be boring. Decor is being filled with furniture and accessories that are made from great textures, shapes, and finishes. Light or deep blue is being used as an accent color and brown leathers are definitely important. Olive and purple are being infused into rooms as well. Reds are more orange in tone and as previously stated, caramel, cream, and gray are very popular.
Gray is one of the most used colors for 2013. It is beautiful when blended with gemstone colors like deep purple or green. It also looks nice with yellows and oranges.
Choosing the right tone of gray is important as well. Some grays are muddy which will detract from the room. A clear gray will appear fresh and crisp, especially when used with a pure white. Many major catalog brands are filling pages with grays. Gray paint, accessories, furniture, and stained woods are everywhere. Gray has the power to add class and elegance to a space while keeping it contemporary as well.

Decorating Ideas For 2013

When a person does not want gray as the major color idea, it can be used in small accents in the decor. Most homes are leaning in a warmer direction. People are also searching for quality products. As budgets become tighter and tighter, homeowners are looking to purchase furniture and household items that will be durable and last a long time. Even though this may cost more money up front, it will be worth it in the long term.
Many homes are becoming smaller sized without an aspect of comfort. Using soft colors and textures will make the home seem homey and welcoming. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to keep the floor plan open and flowing. Neutral colors along with natural accents are popular for 2013. More and more homes are exposing stone accents and open ceiling beams. Marble counter tops have continued to dominate kitchens as well.
To create a unique atmosphere, people are using special art and antiques throughout the home. Taking advantage of natural materials is also important. A “green” atmosphere can include the use of bamboo instead of hardwoods or plastics.

MASTER BEDROOM REFLECTS RESTFUL RETREAT

Decorating Themes

2013 is seeing a variety of decor themes. People may choose a French decor or more earthy ideas. Shells and ocean themes are popular and add a bit of relaxation to the atmosphere. Others install French doors onto patio openings and incorporate floral patterns into the room. This upcoming year, botanicals will be in abundance, since it is a simple means of bringing the outside into the indoors.
Other homes will use a Bohemian theme. This will be popular for the bedroom. Bedding and curtains are two places that designs can reflect the theme. Most patterns will combine two or three different colors. When mixed with neutral walls, the room will appear splashed with color.
Wallpaper is becoming more popular in 2013. Larger prints will keep furniture upholstery much simpler along with bedding or other accessories. Scroll patterns and chevrons are extremely trendy. A clean pattern of a few colors will not overpower the room.
2013 is the year for gray. No matter which room is being decorated, it is important to find something that will be quality made and last a long time. In the end, a timeless and neutral design will be worth the money.

Interior Painting In Winter

by Anonymous from Brampton, Ontario, Canada
Is it wise to paint your home interior in ARKANSAS winter when the outside temperature is freezing? Does it create some harmful fumes for the inhabitants of the home if you are using water based paints? Does it affects its finish and how much time it takes to get the paint dry? Is it necessary to keep the windows open a little bit? What happens if the heat is on and inside temperature is set at 72 degrees? All the relevant information about interior painting at this time of the year?
Answered by KEN RADER OF KEN RADER INTERIORS-PAINTERS, NORTHWEST ARKANSAS
Interior painting during a cold winter is very doable. Some problems you will run into include slower drying and curing of the paint. Fumes could also be another problem if you use oil base paint. Most if not all regular acrylic house paints are low VOC now so fumes is much less of a problem. If you are sensitive to paint fumes I recommend using a no-VOC paint.
Other problems with painting during cold weather are;
1- Condensation forming on windows. This is one good reason to ventilate during and shortly after painting.
2- The interior temperature could slow down the drying time a bit. Modern acrylic house paints dry very well in cool temperatures. This could be waiting overnight to apply a second coat. To help you could use a fan to circulate the air in a room.
Overall there isn't many problems with interior painting during the cold winter months. The best practices are paying attention to interior humidity and apply thinner coats to help with drying.
Several of the new paint products on the market such as paint and primer combination or Gliddens paint ,primer and filler combination dry very fast. This is a plus for painting indoors in the winter. They are also either Zero or Low VOC which will cut down on the smell as well. Most of these products can receive a second coat in about 1 to 2 hours and you will only need one good coat and a second light coat.
Painting the inside of your home during the winter is a lot of fun. You can't do much outside and are confined indoors for longer periods of time. And doing a project will keep you busy rather than zoning out on the couch with a movie, though that is a good thing from time to time as well.
I am posting some pictures of rooms that will perhaps inspire you to either paint the rooms yourself or hire it done by the professional. Winter is a slow time for professional painters so most will be able to do your job quickly and they usually have a winter special. We here at Ken Rader Interiors offer several specials during the winter months that make painting the inside of your house very appealing. Email us at kennethrader@att.net or give us a call at (479)443-3686 to find out what our specials are and book an appointment for a free estimate.
One of the biggest challenges to painting is picking the right color. A professional painting company will have a decorator on staff that can help you with that. We do and you will be amazed at how quickly a color can be chosen.

The colors in this bedroom bring the outdoors in, creating a tranquil setting
for sleep and relaxation.

Various shades of green combine with touches of blue for a soft palette ideal
for a bedroom.

Bold hues of pink give this bedroom a warm and sophisticated feeling.

Soothing earth tones and vibrant gold combine to give this bedroom a
non-traditional look

Artwork and accessories have no place in a room where materials and clean lines take center stage. White porcelain tile, cabinetry and countertops create a feeling of tranquility.

An aged mirror, flanked by two antique nickel sconces, carves out the room's focal point and creates the illusion of space in the home's first-floor bathroom.
