A lot of work but the results are worth it! WHAT IS INVOLVED? This project will call for the updating of Kitchen Cabinets. Here are the steps that will be involved to transform them. 1. Masking off all of the counter tops, walls, floors, insides of some of the cabinets, ceilings and doorways. The homeowners wanted to save the paint job on the walls and ceilings, so extensive masking was called for. They had recently put in new wood floors in the Kitchen and extra care was taken to mask off the floor and use tape that would not harm the new finish, There are 4 doorways into the kitchen and these had to be masked off to prevent spray dust to filter into the rest of the house. 2. Clean the cabinets. This is a necessary step before you start to sand on them. We removed all of the doors, hinges, and drawers. These will be cleaned, sanded and finished at our shop. There was just no room either in the home or on the property to work on these items. 24 doors, 12 drawers. 3. Sand the cabinets. This is a 3 step process, First, sand with 120 grit paper, Second, sand with 220 grit, and third, wash the cabinets down with de-glosser also known as sanding liquid. 4. Prime the cabinets. The primer that we are using is "Glidden Gripper". This primer will stick to almost any surface. And since we are using Latex/Acrylic paint, this is an ideal primer. Dries quick, provides a stain blocker and gives a wonderful smooth hard finish. 5. Paint the cabinets. Color- Swiss Coffee We are using 'Behr Ultra Premium Plus" which is a primer and paint combination. This is a fairly heavy bodied paint and holds to the surface very well. It sets up pretty quick so it does not sag or run like some paints will. I like to put a lot of product on the surface and this is the paint to do it with. I am using my Graco ProShot II to do the spraying with. Wonderful tool and not as much overspray as there is with a conventional airless sprayer. There is a learning curve with this machine but once you master it you will always choose it for inside spraying. Also, most painters refuse to use Latex/Acrylic paint on cabinets. I think this is throwback to the time when Acrylic paint was not very good. Most use Lacquer because it is so forgiving, dries fast and the impression is that it is more durable and lasting. Lacquer begins to deteriorate from the moment it is applied. It is a 'Hot' topcoat so it will burn the product (Primer,Paint) It will grey or yellow unevenly as time goes by. Whites are no longer white. And as it ages the finish gets very hard and will chip and crack very easily. The Premium Latex/Acrylic paints on the market today usually carry a lifetime warranty against changing color or becoming so brittle that it will chip off. Remember though, all paint will chip if you hit it hard enough or use abrasive materials on it. 6. Glaze the cabinets. We are using our own glaze mixture with the color ' Melted Chocolate' mixed in the glaze. Get it in the grooves an corners heavy but then just light glazing and buffing on the flat surfaces. 7. Clear Coat the Cabinets. We will be using 'General Finishes- Polycrylic. This is a water base top coat that is extremely durable and will not yellow or change the color of the paint or glaze. Dries super fast, so you can put on 3 to 4 coats within a couple of hours. Super smooth, super hard and this product flows out like a factory finish. The doors and drawers are at the shop and I will post some pictures of them as we progress with them. I will also post some pictures of the glazing and top coating of the cabinets. We will start glazing the cabinets Monday September 23,2013. Then we will start on the doors and drawers in our shop. I will post our progress. There are several ways that cabinets can be updated. They can be painted, faux finished or we can freshen them up with a stain toner. The application of stain toner produces a very good look and is very cost effective. The application of the stain toner will give the cabinets a new look. The color will be darker and very rich. For instance, if your cabinets are stained oak and are looking dated and tired. You can apply a toner in a rich mahogany, cherry,pecan, well any of a hundred stain colors. Then a protective clear coat is applied and the cabinets are ready to last another 20 years. This is a new process that we have just started. We are very pleased with the results and we are sure that you would love the new life it can give your cabinets. Thank you for viewing our blog. Skillful use of color can even disguise design flaws, boosting the curb appeal and market value of your home. How do you find that magic color combination? Check out these exterior paint ideas. 1. Honor History If you're planning to paint an older home, you'll probably want to use a historically accurate color scheme. You can hire a pro to analyze old paint chips and recreate the original color. Or, you can refer to historic color charts and select shades that might have been used at the time your home was built. 2. Jazz Up the Past In some neighborhoods, homeowners fly in the face of history. Instead of choosing historically accurate colors, they paint their houses modern colors to dramatize architectural details. Using bright colors on old architectural details can produce startling and exciting results. But before you buy 10 gallons of bubblegum pink, it's a good idea to look at what your neighbors are doing. A fluorescent colored Victorian that looks splendid in San Francisco will seem wildly out of place in more conservative neighborhoods. 3. Your paint color doesn't need to match the roof, but it should harmonize. 6. Look For Things That Won't Be Painted Every home has some features that will not be painted. Does your house have brick walls? Vinyl windows? A natural wooden door? Will steps and railings remain their existing colors? Choose a color scheme that harmonizes with colors already present on your house. 7. Find Inspiration in Your Living Room It may seem comical to paint entire house based on the pattern of a pillow case, but this approach does make sense. The color of your furnishings will guide you in the selection of your interior paint colors, and your interior paint colors will influence the colors you use outside. Once again, your goal is to harmonize. 8. Focus on Details Depending on the size and complexity of your home, you may want to choose two, three, or as many as six colors. In addition to color for your siding, select accent colors for shutters, moldings, doors, window sashes, brackets, columns, and porch decks. But beware: too many colors will overwhelm your house. House Paint Durability The more intense a color, the more likely it is to fade. After a few years, vivid blues and deep reds might seem more subdued. Dark colors can also pose more maintenance problems. Dark colors absorb heat and suffer more moisture problems than lighter shades. And because dark paint fades, it can be difficult to match exactly when you do small touch-ups. But, don't rule out dark colors. They won't show dust and stains, and can give your house a sense of dignity or drama. House Paint Sheen House paint comes in several sheens, ranging from glossy to flat. The glossier the surface, the more likely it is to show imperfections, brush strokes and touch up marks. On the other hand, glossy surfaces are easier to clean. Many homeowners opt to use flat paint for walls and semi-gloss or glossy paint for columns, railings and window sashes. Paint Color Deceptions Color swatches look very different when they are brought out of the store and viewed in natural sunlight. Also, colors appear lighter on large surfaces than they do on small samples. Chances are, you'll need a much darker color than the one you first picked. Spring is finally here and it is time to freshen up your home.

Simplicity is King this spring. Neutral colors paired with dark stained wood is all the rage.

Accenting with bright colors is taking center stage. Bright green came on strong this year and looks to continue to be a favorite.

Very simple, neutral walls, green accents and basic furniture. Yellow and Gold colors complete this fresh look.

In this bedroom the bed is the focal point. Once again, neutral color on the walls. Notice the introduction of Gray. Gray is a leader in color choices this year. Not overdone but just enough to accent.

For Girls bedrooms, Pink is the top choice. It is coupled with another strong color "Gold". See the green lamp shade?

Brown and Gray combinations with the dark wood furniture will be very popular. Throw pillows are making a comeback.

This is not our favorite but many are leaning towards the cool appearance. Light gray, blue and whites with a touch of black.

Tan, Brown, Taupe and a minimal amount of furniture.

That winning combination, Wood tone, green and neutral wall color.

Even small bedrooms are making the Bed the focal point.

Kids bedrooms are being freshened up with bright Pastels. Most of this would be DIY.

What Colors will we see in the future?

What's trending in color this year? Well if you ask me you will get one answer, but if you ask someone else you will get another. But, as the year progresses we are seeing some definite trends from the fashion world and the paint companies are following suit.
People who chose green last year are now opting for a bold gold.
Since paint is just as much a part of the fashion and color industry as clothing and automobiles, everyone's got a say in what colors are on the wall.
With some palettes, there is a calming effect and a break from the bold colors and this seems to be gentler on the eye. But BOLD is in for other palettes.
So what are we seeing with these two different palettes?
Ginger Root, Beige, green, brown, tan, cinnamon, copper, gold, mahogany, deep blue, grey, newport blue, red gumball, just to mention a few. You will find Teal and Fuschia.
All of the major paint makers are getting on board with these colors and are describing their colors as sophisticated, Techy and dramatic. And I must admit that sophistication is being found in home decor, as we're building increasingly complex decor designs with depth of color.
Of course this trend is not abut just one color. It's about the combination of all the colors in a particular space. Sophistication can take man forms, and each palette plays into not only color, but the emotional trends of the upcoming years.
Take for instance the " Luxury Contemporary and Classic Palette"
It is a contemporary take on classic masculine and feminine ideas, blending a variety of materials. This theme relies heavily on texture, surface design and material to convey craftsmanship and emphasizes the importance of integrity in design.
You have Metallics, Woods, Textured Fabrics all of which offer a rugged and refined timelessness.
The mood of this palette is conveyed in pairing rich reddish browns with rich blues and pale blues and grays.
Within this palette you will use Copper, Mahogany, Deep Blue, gray and Tan.

In following articles we will look at " Eclectic and Vibrant, Fantastical and Enchanting, Thoughtful and Versatile and Modern Tech". Within each of these palettes you will find the use of some very bold colors.
These bold colors paired with the softer earthy colors are going to be around for years to come," say the paint makers". They are promoting these colors and are confident they will continue to show up for the next 4 to 5 years.
A good indicator of this can be seen in the colors that are being offered for automobile paint and interiors color schemes. These cars will be around for some years and cost a lot of money, so you have to be happy with the color for several years. We also change the paint color in our homes on average every 4 to 5 years.

Ken Rader Interiors "Neutral Colors" Part 2

As the new year continues to progress we are seeing certain colors rise to the top as it were. The leaders appear to be Neutrals and Natural colors. Most of the natural colors are Neutral and they are showing up on items that will be around for a long time. One example is cars. Yes after the resurgence of White we have seen Natural colors and Neutral colors taking center stage.
Of course the car that I drive is not in this class, I do like the color and would consider buying a Chevy or Ford in this color.

What are the trending color? Looking at the color trend reports for 2013 it becomes crystal clear to me that sustainability working hard for acceptance by the broader public. Natural colors are exploding in 2013! The best examples can be found in the colors for the automotive industry. After a revival of the color white it is now time for earthy colors like amber, brown and variations of ‘luxury green’ in European car design according to trend watchers of BASF Coatings’ international design team. They point out that luxury and sustainability are no longer strangers but go together well. In Germany already 12% of
new cars are brown? Interesting to say the least. Brown is Neutral and a Natural color.

Also in the home decorating colors we will see a lot of browns and greens in 2012 and 2013, next to several bright colors like yellow and red. This mixture of pleasure and nature is intriguing. PPG Industry has made some nice color palettes illustrating how these colors match.

The colors on the left are in the natural/neutral whereas the colors on the right are natural/accent.
It's not just about colors in 2013. "Earthy textures lay a new foundation for palettes of blues and greens," I suggest breathing new life into an existing room with several coats of ocean-blue paint.

The palette that mixes sandy brown, vibrant tangerine, peacock blue, and fiery pink together, is not for the color shy. "It's inspired by bright tribal tones," says Eiseman. "The colors are bold and forthright." And they were the perfect shades to create an inviting respite in Prudent Baby blogger Jacinda Boneau's courtyard entry. It is always difficult to define a certain family of colors. This is because as time passes our likes and dislikes change. What we like and call warm and neutral does change.

Warm Neutral Paint Colors of today are not the same as a year or two ago.
The reason is colors make a whole world of a difference to our mindset, our thoughts, and the way we feel. Among the various colors, warm neutral paint colors are known to comfort us, and help us unwind. Let's look into some great warm and neutral paint colors and the effect they create.

Warm colors are those that give us a feeling of coziness in a room. The room becomes inviting, comforting, and are perfect for rooms where you would like to sit back, relax, and send yourself into a comfortable nap. Such warm colors include shades of yellow, red, orange, and browns. Neutral colors are those that can easily combine with any other color without creating a big contrast or an unbearable difference in color choices. Thus, warm neutral colors are those that will embrace you with warmth without being overwhelming.

There are some individuals who are not comfortable among very cool colors such as blue, purple, gray, or even white for that matter. These colors, while perfect for a place where you would like to calm yourself down, may usually not produce the desired comfort in bedrooms, living rooms, and the like. They seem to give out a kind of cool feeling. This of course is my personal opinion, and a lot of you may beg to differ. In any case, warm neutral paint colors work wonderfully to suit all the aforementioned purposes you wish to achieve from them. Neutral doesn't necessarily have to mean dull. In fact, such colors when used in warmer tones can be used brilliantly to spice up the appearance of a room! Irrespective of the kind of room you are trying to bring alive, these colors will do their bit and leave you feeling warm and cozy.

It may seem to you that off white as a room color is overdone, but there is a reason why it is so popular and continues to remain so till date. It is because of the beauty with which it can offset almost any color, without appearing cold like pure white. This color can be combined with darker warm and neutral colors to give any room a rich, elegant appeal.
This soothing and neutral, but warm pale yellow works wonders when used in any room. Not only does it generate the coziness that is expected of a warm color, it also enlivens a room particularly if the room has a lot of natural light, thereby serving a dual purpose. To enhance its warmth with artificial lighting, use yellow lights, floor lamps, and hanging lamps. Watch the effect it then creates.
Similar to the yellow color, this shade of peach can be warm yet refreshing at the same time. Combine it with cream colored furniture and other colorful accessories, that include colors such as green, blue, yellow, brown, golden, and gray. This beautiful color embraces almost all other colors lovingly to create a gorgeous, unified space with a unique identity.
Another great color, sandy beige shade will bring out the ultimate warmth in a room. This color can also be used to generate a regal feel by using furniture with a golden colored trim on it. The same also goes for accessories. In essence, a splash of a dull gold shade with this color would simply look divine.

Next is Tan that is indicative of an alluring tan color is slightly darker, though still neutral. Use it to highlight a wall against which you may place a beautiful wall fixture, a painting, or a collection of wall artifacts. While this will make your accent wall, use an off-white (such as the one indicated above) or a very light beige color for the remaining walls to give your room the warmth you desire.

Another very dark shade that should be used only to accentuate the warmth in a room and not define it is Chocolate Brown. It is highly popular as a warm neutral paint color. This color would work superbly when used of course with dull gold, but also with a bright or light orange to further enhance the warmth in your room. While ideal for a master bedroom, you should be careful with this color as it can also overpower the entire room and make it unbearable to sit in; so use it sparingly. Again, this rich color can be combined with any of the other indicated colors in this list.There are several more warm yet neutral paint colors that you will find when you go to finally select a color at a paint store. However, they are all variations of the colors provided here. The idea that you should keep in mind when choosing these colors is the purpose of your room, the kind of colors you want to combine with them, and the ultimate effect that you desire. Choose wisely and bring alive your room by using an elegant combination of paint colors, furniture colors, and the colors of the accessories you use.
